About this work

Description

Possibly based on the ruined Antonine Baths (Thermae antoninianae, Baths of Caracalla) in Rome. The ruin of the dome appears to be in an impossibly unstable state: Clerisseau painted similar domes and arches at Hadrian's villa in Tivoli. A shepherdess with a sheep talks to a kneeling young woman and a seated boy. On the left is an ancient altar carved with a festoon of fruit in deep relief
