About this work

Description

A science series designed for secondary school students but of wide general interest. Part 1: Designer Babies" (Genetics and inheritance) Looks at the development of new assisted reproduction technologies, their implications, and at efforts to eradicate thalassaemia in Cyprus. Part 2: Frozen to Death" (Human organ preservation) Cryonics - freezing dead bodies in the hope that future technologies will find a way to revive them - is an idea that began in America and has now spread to the United Kingdom. It raises the question of how we define death. Part 3: A Risky Business" (Energy) Looks at the problems of electricity supply in war-torn Beirut, in France and the U.K. and balances the advantages of nuclear-power generated electricity against the risks of a disastrous nuclear accident. Part 4: The Black Desert" (The Kuwait oil fires) Examines the problems of extinguishing Kuwait's oil fires, started during the Iraq invasion, which have resulted in devastating environmental damage which may have global effects. Part 5: Big Bang" (Space) The management of day- to-day life for space crews is examined in the light of the Arizona biosphee project.
