About this work

Description

The Porteous Riots were caused by the hanging of a smuggler in Edinburgh in 1736. Captain John Porteous ordered the military to fire on the rioters and killed many. He was sentenced to death, but his execution was deferred. The mob, however, seized him afterwards and hanged him. The incident had Jacobite overtones and was used by Sir Walter Scott in his novel The heart of Midlothian
