About this work

Description

Third in a 3-part series of programmes broadcast to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Health Service, where a cross-section of the general public are able to put forward their views of the NHS. This programme offers a recap of the previous two sessions, featuring the group discussions and the question and answer sessions with health officials and MPs. The last part of the programme compares the results of the survey taken by the participants before and after the 2-day discussion session. Their views on the NHS seem to have been reinforced after the debates, with a greater understanding of how the NHS works and where the money comes from. It is clear from the final survey that there is a passionate defence of the NHS in Britain, and a massive commitment to the original ideals of a health service that is universal and free, regardless of age and circumstances. The common thought is that more funding is needed, with most people in favour of higher taxation.
