Description
The military hospital, V.R. 76 was founded in 1915 by the Hon. Lady Johnstone and Mr Harold J. Reckitt. Situated at Ris-Orangis (12 miles south of Paris), treating only surgical cases, the hospital was the operating centre for a group of nine hospitals attached to it. The hospital closed in 1918

Lettering continued: "Wounded at Chalons (?) March 12; 1916 at 8 p.m. Was standing up in an advanced position as a sentinel. He lost consciousness from being thrown down and suffered agonising pain in his left leg which was almost detached at the knee. The first dressing was from a comrade, in the trench, was then carried on a stretcher to theatre for amputation"
