The antique lamp upon the tripod represents the emblem of life. A moth hovering over the bright flames points to the uncertainty of life's duration. Two children watch with eager admiration the movements of the moth, unconscious of its danger. Penelope, the emblem of faithfulness, with a stork, the emblem of parental love, by her side, is striving to turn the children's attention to the temple of Minerva, the seat of wisdom. This stands at a distance, on the Acropolis of Athens, and behind it rises the treasury of the ancient city.
