About this work

Description

Scrapbook entitled 'Trials of a Pharmacist' containing requests for drugs, toiletries and cosmetics received by the pharmacist Lewis Herbert Llewellyn. The requests are notable for their illegible handwriting and misinterpretations of drug and brand names, and are annotated by Llewellyn with the correct terms. Such requests appears to have been something of a trade joke, judging from the cutting from The Chemist and Druggist headed 'At the Counter', f.5v.

With the exception of two entries for 1928-1929 the requests are not dated individually, but according to a note at the front of the volume by H M Llewellyn, Lewis Llewellyn's son, they date from 1916-1932.

Of particular interest are several notes to Llewellyn consulting him over symptoms and asking for a diagnosis and recommended treatment. One note asks for something 'to wi[t]ch craft some one as they wont let me alone as they are down on me and I cant rest', November 1929, f.21v. The volume also contains one loose request, and a printed card from Llewellyn's widow and sons giving thanks for condolences on his death, 1932.
