About this work

Description

Letters by James Meadows Rendel (1799-1856), an engineer who began his career as a surveyor under Thomas Telford (1757-1834) and specialised in the construction of docks and harbour works. Also letters by two of his sons, also engineers: Sir Alexander Meadows Rendel (1829-1918), consulting engineer to the East India Company and founder of the firm of Rendel, Palmer and Tritton; and George Wightwick Rendel (1833-1902), partner in the Elswick works of William Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Cragside (1810-1900), and Civil Lord of the Admiralty. Correspondents include the engineers Charles Manby (1804-1884) (see MS. 7237) and Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859).
