Biographical note

James Maxwell MD was surgeon to the Annotta Bay Marine Hospital, Jamaica, and wrote this essay drawing on his experiences in the West Indies. The Essay was awarded the Gold Medal of the Senatus Academicus of the University of Edinburgh and published as Observations on yaws and its influence in originating leprosy (Edinburgh, 1839).
