![NESSEL consists of over 2000 originals and copies of documents, official papers, and other MSS. relating to Nelson, and to the various fleets under his command at different times. It extends from 1780 to his death in 1805, but is chiefly grouped around the year of Aboukir (1798), and the three years 1803-1805 when he commanded the Mediterranean Fleet. The contents include several hundred official reports and surveys concerned with the manning, ordnance, stores, defects, lists of sick and wounded from the various ships. They are mostly addressed to Nelson himself, and a large number relate to the ‘Victory ’. They bear the signatures of most of the eminent naval officers under his command. There are also weekly reports by the chief physicians of the Fleet, as to the comparative health of the ships, the number of sick, with long notes as to prevalent illnesses, treatment, etc. Other reports deal with provisions and stores, courts martial, prize money, prisoners of war, sick and wounded, seamen’s pay, etc., etc. Other autograph letters and papers are addressed to Nelson on matters of inven tions and requests for his influence as to places and promotions. There is also a collection of early bills for furniture, clothes, medicines and provisions supplied to him. Purchased 1928. (47757) NELSON [afterwards SPEED] (Sarah).
