About this work

Description

light micrograph of an early chick embryo stained using a process called in situ hybridisation. this technique identifies specific gene expression patterns, here the purple staining marks the expression pattern of the Wnt8c gene. The structure highlighted by this staining is the primitive streak, which forms along the midline of the embryo and signals the start of gastrulation. During gastrulation the different cell layers are organised.
