Biographical note

Sir Robert Alexander Chermside (1787-1860) was educated as a surgeon and appointed as assistant surgeon to the 7th hussars in 1810. He served during the Peninsular War and was at the battle of Waterloo. He received his MD from Edinburgh University in 1817 and became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in London in 1821 (and a fellow in 1843).
