About this work

Description

Correspondence with Lady Brock, ITAR-TASS, Jack Botting and the Bodleian Library regarding the provenance of an infamous photograph of a monkey smoking a cigar. "I have a little personal interest, since my own portrait was placed alongside it in the T[imes]H[igher]E[ducational]S[upplement] appearance in February 1982" (Paton to ITAR-TASS, 9 February, 1993). In 'Man and Mouse', in the course of discussing "the scientific inadequacy and prejudice of some animal welfare comment," Paton refers to the same photograph: "one may find in a distinguished daily paper the same picture of a monkey, apparently smoking a cigarette, inserted repeatedly into articles on animal experiment in Britain, even _after_ an enquiry was reported in the House of Lords which had shown that it is a Russian picture, with no explanation or reference, distributed by the Tass News Agency" (1993, p. 6).
