About this work

Description

Three black and white photographs of a man who had a goitre which had existed for many years. During the five months preceding the period at which the photograph was taken, the tumour had considerably increased in size, especially upon the right side, and it appeared to be the seat of malignant disease. There is a narrowing of the palpebral fissure with contraction of the pupil, due to pressure upon the sympathetic nerve in the neck. The patient presented himself as an out-patient at St Barthomew's Hospital. The tumour was believed to be a sarcoma and was subsequently removed by operation at another hospital (St Thomas's).
