Description
Manuscript diary detailing Haggard's experiences suffering from tuberculosis of the scrotum, 1950-1953. Entries describe his symptoms, treatment, how the illness progresses and his admissions to and discharges from hospital. f.1 blank f.5 diary entries, are numbered from 11 Nov 1950 onwards (starting at 33 for the number of days since he was first operated on) ff.2-83v diary entries (mostly on the recto, as the verso contains additional notes: who visited and called, notes on penicillin taken etc.) A note has been inserted between ff.10v and 11 (probably by Jack Haggard, as the note is not contemporary with the diary) A letter has been inserted between ff.83v and 84 from? to Mrs Rayner-Wood concerning various physicians, 18 February 1951 ff.84-116 blank ff.116v-120v Christmas card list, which begins at the end of the volume, with the volume having been turned the other way up.

Biographical note
Captain Andrew Haggard (nephew of Sir Henry Rider Haggard) trained originally as a railway engineer. After serving in World War I he became a fruit grower, and, with his cousin Harry Spencer Bickham, he developed the Hilltop Fruit Farm, Ledbury, Herefordshire. During World War II he was appointed to the country was agricultural committee, and chaired the committee responsible for the allocation of fruit to processors. He served on the agricultural committee of the University of Bristol, the governing body of Long Ashton Research Station. He was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree by the University of Bristol in 1974 and died (as the result of a car accident) in 1976.
