About this work

Description

Lectures on the Materia Medica. Vol. II [only]. [Taken down by Dr. John Fothergill [1712-1780] at St. Thomas's Hospital, London]. There is a long section Ff. 37-56 on cinchona, which may be compared with the remarks on pp. 42, 44 of 'Dr. John Fothergill and his Friends' 1919 by R. Hingston Fox M.D., which seems to support the attribution of this MS. to the famous Quaker physician. The latest date-1754-is found on Fol. 96v. Produced in London.

Biographical note

From internal evidence it seems very probable that these notes were made by Dr. John Fothergill, and at St. Thomas's Hospital, where he attended a course of lectures on the practice of physic by Dr. (afterwards Sir Edward) Wilmot. Fothergill carried on special studies in materia medica. In this MS. there are obvious additions to the original notes of lectures.
