Lettering on verso: "Hori Ngatai". Chief Ngaiterangi tribe. In 1863, he and some of his people fought at Meremere on the Waikato River; and at Otau, Wairoa South. He was one of the defenders of the Gate Pa. In his latter years at one time was the largest grower of wheat and maize at Tauranga. Received medal from present King as chief of tribe in 1901. In 1902 he sent artist an ancestral greenstone "in memory of our fight side by side" (letter), see "Pounamu", page 45. Called his first grandson "Te Tuki" (the Duke) Called his second grandson "Te Ropere" (Robley) [Died 1912] A portrait in Illustrated London News 29 November 1864 - in centre of a group, as orator. Signed.
