On which account it may be rea- fonably queftioned, whether there be any more ready and prevalent antidote to be found in the whole works of nature. And the moft antient and early writers in me¬ dicine both knew and defcribed the cer¬ tain virtue of milk again ft poifons. Diof~ fcorides, the moft ancient writer concerning the Materia Medica, fays, that milk, if frefh and new, is ferviceable againft corrofions and inflammations occasioned by deadly poifons, fuch as cantharides, pityocampa, falamandra, or buprefte, orpiment, dorycnium, aconite, or ephemeron. And Pliny repeats almoft the very fame account. If we enquire into the treatment of dif- cafes themfelves, it will appear that milk was frequently and fuccefsfully employed againft them, from nurnberlefs teftimonies and examples to be found in many late au- thors, in common with tliofe antient phyfi^ dans Hippocrates, Galen, Celfus, and the Arabian writers.
