Project Summary:In 2012 Dr Bart Hoogenboom at the London Centre for Nanotechnology created the first 'real' visualisation of the DNA double helix in its natural aqueous environment. Using atomic force microscopy that detects molecules by feeling them, he described the imaging of DNA as analogous to a blind man using a cane to visualise a wriggling snake. Working in collaboration with Dr Bart Hoogenboom, The Demiurge is a Sci-Fi film by AL and AL about the nano scale quest for DNA knowledge of the human body a nd the recurring haunting symbolism and myths of the serpent image in modern medicine. Following the snakes associations of venom and knowledge, healing and medicine in the Rod of Asclepius, The Demiurge will explore the great dangers and the saving power of nanobiotechnology. Entering individual function groups within DNA serpents, the film will transport audiences into an unseen world of water based nano-devices saving the human body. At the centre of the unfurling sci-fi drama will be a biop hysicist haunted by the DNA serpents he has captured. The Demiurge behind the riddle of life was the human being: the one which has driven itself out of Nature. The seemingly irreversible agony of loss suffered by human beings alienated from Nature accompanies us through the past of mythical origins. The DNA serpents we have discovered at the fundamental level of our creation may open us up to a new horizon of wisdom about what we discern when we ask, what is natural?
