L'encyclopedie.

L'Encyclopaedie, "an analytical dictioary of the sciences, arts and trades" consists of 28 volumes, edited by Diderot and d'Alembert between 1751 and 1772. In this programme, Giles Barber (Librarian, Taylorian Institution, Oxford University) and Robert Fox (Prof. of the History of Science, Oxford University) discuss the problems associated with its publication, the importance of its illustrative plates, the way in which it conveys respect for scientific method and how it shifted the world picture from one dominated by theology to one which emphasised the potential achievements of man and science. There is a detailed discussion of the advances of surgery in which Dr. Christopher Lawrence (WIHM)demonstrates the use of lithotomy instruments.
