Left, Saint Thomas Aquinas, seated and writing a folio volume on a desk or diagonal board. Right, a crucfix and, behind, an open book lying on top of two closed books, one of which is inscribed on the spine "Super IV. Sententiarum", i.e. Saint Thomas's commentary on Peter Lombard's Sentences (Scripta super IV libros sententiarum), written ca. 1256
