About this work

Description

How do epidemiologists respond to public fears? Are birth abnormalities in a Welsh village caused by a landfill site? Epidemiologists are unable to prove any connection. There does seem to be a higher rate of gastroschisis. People attribute all illnesses to the tip. An accident at Bolsover exposed workers to high levels of dioxin, but a study did not prove increased cancer risk. At a semi-conductor factory in Greenock in Scotland, women exposed to solvents feared increased miscarriages, but a study found no increased rate. Are the samples too small?
