About this work

Description

Ex Medicina D. Galeno [sic] et Pharmacia. Notes of lectures in Latin by an anonymous Professor, probably given at an Italian University. A title-page, pp. 435-444, and four leaves at the end are wanting. Contents: De methodo medendi (pp. 1-85); De morbis particularibus (pp. 92-401); De morbis mulierum (pp. 405-494); Pharmacia [De medicamentis] (pp. 505-614). The spine is inscribed 'Ex Medicina [etc.]' as given above: below this is a monogram containing the letters S.S.M.P. which are perhaps the initials of the scribe or of the lecturer. Under this again as a monogram BZ, the initials of Bartolomeo Zondis, whose signature appears on the first unpaginated leaf, probably written in the early 19th cent. Notes of lectures at an Italian university or college. It can be approximately dated by the reference to Willisius, i.e. Thomas WILLIS [1621-1675] on p. 99 and elsewhere in connection with brain and nerve diseases. His 'Pathologia cerebri' was published in 1667, and the 'Affectionum quae dicuntur hystericae et hypochondriacae pathologia' in 1670. The form of name used for Galen and the dates are according to the entry in the 'Lexicon der alten Welt'. 1965.
