Biographical note

The author was a distinguished experimental physiologist. After taking his M.D. is Paris in 1859, he invented the sphygmograph in 1860, and was elected Member of the Académie de Médecine in 1872, and of the Académie des Sciences in 1878. From 1867 to 1904 he was Professeur d'Historie Naturelle des Corps Organisés as successor to Marc Jean Pierre Flourens [1794-1867] at the Collège de France.
