About this work

Description

Includes correspondence 1962-1965 with Matthew Lee, a young teenager from Hull who together with his friends ran an annual fundraising effort for thalidomide children. By 1963 their scheme centred on a life-size "speaking guy called George" that "was worked by means of my tape recorder in my friends garage and a 70 yard cable leading to an external speaker hidden in the guys head" [sic]. All Matthew's friends "joined in helping to record the 30 minute message".

Matthew and his friends raised over £50 the following year.

Includes coverage by the local press, with photographs.
