About this work

Description

Actor John Sessions improvises on the subject of madness and psychiatry. The piece starts with Sessions acting out a scene of a workman delivering a couch to a nervous and apparently unsuccessful analyst. He then gives us his take on the history of madness, featuring characters such as Hogarth, Jonathan Swift, Prince Albert (being admitted to a lunatic asylum by mistake), Channel 4 directors and presenters making programmes about mentally ill people, Freud, General Haig, Richard Dadd, King Lear, Charles Dickens and a social worker. [Cataloguer's note: non-admirers of John Sessions should probably steer clear of this.]
