Dear Francis, I hope you didn't feel that my review of your book in NATURE was in any way too frivolous. I was sent the book just before I went off on a summer holiday, and the note fro® NATURE said a review, length ad lib. I wrote the review sitting under a vine pergola which kept off the fuïT~ intensity of the sun at the little peasant's shack where we spend our holidays in Italy. And I frankly wrote it in a style in which serious matters are not treated with undue solemnity. A he title I originally suggested was : QUARKS/, QUIRKS and the one and only CRICK in biology. NATURE wouldn't tate that, ostentively on the grounds that it didn't fat into one line of type. So I suggested : QUARKS and CRICK'S QUIRKS. But they wouldn't take that either, on grounds of euphony. All of which has left me feeling that perhaps I really haven't been exhibiting adequately respectful sobriety.I am sure you're most unlikely to mind, but if you felt any temptation to think I was unduly flippant, please believe md that this is the highest form of flattery.
