About this work

Description

In the second of three programmes, Mark Kermode investigates the positive image of the scientist in the cinema. Films such as Màrie Curie' (1943), starring Greer Garson and D̀r Erlichs Magic Bullet' (1954), starring Edward G Robinson, show the scientist as the hero. During the 40's and 50's, actors such as Michael Redgrave and Leslie Howard, starred as the gòod scientist', in films such as T̀he Dam Busters (1954), a fictional account of the invention of the bòuncing bomb' during WW2. However, there are still very few convincing images of women in the sciences, and when they do appear they are often shown as subservient to the rèal scientist', or are over feminised. Includes clips from films as illustration.
