About this work

Description

A series of notebooks in which Audrey documented money spent and money received, and budgeted her money, over the years 1996 to 2013. The volumes are dated by Audrey, and described by her as "Account books". Receipts are arranged (generally) chronologically within a volume, and are normally numbered sequentially within each day. The volumes often document expenditure (and income) down to the penny.

The volumes mostly contain receipts, as well as postal orders, tickets, appointment cards, envelopes and letters, bank and pension statements. Some volumes also contain scrapbook style material, such as newspaper / magazine cuttings and food packaging. These items are annotated with Audrey's commentary (eg, whether the sums add up, money tendered, change given, date and time of purchase, comments on the purchase / shopping experience). Audrey also comments about her experiences and feelings (eg, how the food tasted, whether the price has gone up, if she was asked to leave the shop).

Some lists of purchases are handwritten by Audrey, with items ticked off and added up. Receipts are for household goods and food shopping, bills, donations to charity, receipts acknowledging receipt of letters, and bus tickets.

The volumes often conclude with pension / bank statements, including corresponding envelopes, and lists documenting Audrey's budget and spending. These lists often document when Audrey feels that money has been stolen from her or has disappeared, or notices any other discrepancies in cash.

Some volumes contain a list on the inner leaf of letters received by Audrey, dated, with a summary of their contents.
