Correspondence and papers relating to issues of mental health with regard to patient care, with particular reference to out-patient treatment, psychiatric hospital wards, side-effects of psychotropic drugs, community care schemes, doctor patient relationships, compulsory detention in a mental institutions, discharge of long term patients into the community, long stay patients, treatment of women in psychiatric hospitals, conditions in Broadmoor Hospital, review of Rampton Hospital, disability and mental health, mental health services in Oxford, the 1982 Mental Health Bill, and rehabilitation centres for mentally ill.

File mainly contains the Patients Association's correspondence with the DHSS and MIND, and some with local health authorities and the general public.

Includes numerous documents including DHSS 'Review of the Mental Health Act 1959' (1976), with the Patients Association's comments; DHSS document 'Care in the Community. A consultative document on moving resources for care in England' Jul 1981, with the Patients Association's comments, journal articles and press cuttings; 1975 copies of MIND OUT, New Psychiatry and New Behaviour; DHSS press releases, Hansard extracts containing House of Lords debate on the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 1982.
