The peace referred to in the lettering is the Treaty of the Pyrenees (7 November 1659): France ceded its control of Catalonia south of the Pyrenees, Spain recognized French government of various towns in Flanders, and Maria Theresa (the daughter of King Philip IV of Spain) was betrothed to King Louis XIV of France
