About this work

Description

According to Bartsch, the saints were identified as Martha and Mary by Mariette. Vasari had called the print "a subject of Our Lady ascending the steps of the temple". The catalogue of the publisher Rossi called it "Martha conducting the Magdalene to the Lord preaching in the temple". Bartsch calls it "Notre Dame à l'escalier" (Bartsch, loc. cit.)
