Date of Application, 27th Oct., 1902—Accepted, 8th Jan., 7903 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION. “ A New or Improved Combined Nail Cutter and Nail File I, Ernst Katjfmann, of 30, Plieinstrasse, Solingen, Germany, Manufacturer, Go liereby declare the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement; — ,r> The object of the present invention is a particularly simple tool for cutting and filing the finger and toe nails which in spite of the strength of its cut, does not bend the nail outwardly or depress its surface. The cutting surfaces are made up of the pincer-like edges of two oppositely directed legs but instead of attaching the lever to a collar which surrounds 10 the le g as hitherto, the lever is pivotally secured to a stay which is arranged upon one leg and passes through a suitable slot in the opposite leg in such a way that the lever in its outermost position forms a continuation of one leg. Thus when handling the tool the lever which is formed as a file stands vertical The cutting surface of the nail cutter can therefore equally well, as illustrated 15 in Figures 1 to 8 either clear each other, or, as shewn in the 2nd. method Figures 9—14, come flush together. The individual figures in the accompanying drawings shew the object of the invention at different periods of its use and from different points of view. The nail cutter proper consists of the flat legs i & k which are fixedly eon- 20 needed together at the one end by a pin s. The one leg k is elastic and both are bent over at the upper ends x & y in such a way as to form at this point a pincer like opening. The leg i supports a stay or traverse in which passes through a corresponding slot in the leg k. On the pin r of the stay or tra¬ verse is a file l with a nail cleaner is attached in such a way that with a nose on 25 Ts head it brings the elastic leg against the other or allows them to separate. Hound a pin w which is inserted vertically at the junction of the legs i and k and L shaped attachment v revolves, which serves as a locking plate. Figure 3 shews the position in which the tool is ready to work. When the lever i.e. the file l is pressed against the leg k the nose of the former presses the leg k 30 against the opposite leg, the cutting edges x and y grip the nail and cut it gently but surely, while they clear each other and the cut is a rounded one without the angularities produced by the ordinary scissors, as the cutting edges x and y are made concave. When the tool is used for filing the file l is moved from the position shewn in Figure 3. to that of Figure 5. or Figure 4 36 or Figure G where it is held firmly in position owing to the elasticity of the leg k When out of use the locking plate v is revolved so that it presses the lever l which is brought from the position shewn in Figure 3 into that shewn in Figures 2 against the cutting legs. In order to cut- the nails right up into the corners in cases where they have grown into the flesh of the finger or toe, 40 the cutting edges x and y are made in the shape shewm in Figures 9 to 14. The cutting edges have a concavity not symmetrical with the axis of the broad side of the legs but arranged obliquely to it.
