About this work

Description

Poison book, 1933-1952.

This would appear to be a register kept under the Provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1932, requiring the recording of all prescriptions of scheduled substances under the Act, from 1933 until 1952. It pertains to diamorphine (diacetylmorphine) preparations: separate registers were supposed to be kept for each class of scheduled substance.

The volume was supplied by a Norwich stationer and it contains a note on headed paper from Smith and Sons (Norwich) Ltd, Wholesale Druggists and Manufacturing Chemists: probably the suppliers of the retail chemist providing the drug at the prescription of local doctors, rather than the firm itself to which the register belonged.

A price list of Savory and Moore Ltd's 'Knoll' preparations is to be found inserted into the volume.

Acquisition note

This volume was given to the Wellcome Institute Library in 1971 by Savory and Moore Ltd; possibly the Norwich chemists' shop was at some time one of their retail outlets (see the inserted Savory and Moore price list) and that is how the volume came into their possession. It was transferred from the Library's book collections to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre, now part of the Archives and Manuscripts department, in 1980.
