Typescript copies of confidential minutes of Retreat Committee, 14 December 1920 and 20 September 1921, recording the resignation of Dr Pierce, his retiring allowance and appointment as Consulting Physician 2. Typescript copies of minutes of special meetings of Retreat Committee and representatives of Directors, held on 1 and 16 February, 16 March and 19 April 1921, also of Selection Sub Committee, held 22 March 1921, relating to the appointment of a Medical Superintendent. These papers record the shortlisting of candidates to succeed Dr Pierce as Medical Superintendent, and the selection of Dr Henry Yellowlees. 3. Letter by Dr Henry Yellowlees to the Chairman of the Retreat Committee, 11 April 1921. Dr Yellowlees’s letter was written after he had been invited to come and see over the Retreat in connection with his candidacy for the post of Retreat Medical Superintendent. In the letter he assures the Retreat Committee that the post of Medical Superintendent of the Retreat would be “his life-work”, that it would not be a stepping stone to some future goal, and possibly the only exception which would induce him to leave the Retreat would be the post of Superintendent at Morningside, Edinburgh [where he was currently a Medical Officer]. 4. Typescript copy of Chairman’s letter of 2 June 1921 to Dr Henry Mackenzie [Assistant Medical Officer], and Mackenzie’s letter acknowledging his position under the new Medical Superintendent. 5. Agreement between the Committee of the Retreat and Dr Henry Yellowlees relating to his appointment as Retreat Medical Superintendent, 31 August 1921 [Dr Yellowlees was Medical Superintendent at the Retreat until 1929, when he left to assume the post of Physician for Mental Diseases and Lecturer in Psychological Medicine at St Thomas’s Hospital, London]
