About this work

Description

On the confused identity of Mary Magdalene, see L. Réau, 'Iconographie de l'art chrétien', Paris, 1957, vol. 2, p. 326. She is identified as a sinner, a courtesan, and as both Mary of Magdala and Mary of Bethany

She appears here with the bowl of ointment she used to anoint Jesus at the feast at the house of the Pharisee (Matthew 26.6-13; Mark 14.3-9; Luke 7.36-50; John 12.1-8). She is shown with unkempt hair, a sign here of having left behind the world of bodily concerns
