    13. Congestive Fever. Syn. Pernicious fever. Typhus petecbialia—Spotte fever. Cerebro-spinal meningitis —Brain fever. By T. H. Squire, M. D. Communicated to the Society by the Secretary. Dining the winter and spring of 1857, an epidemic,commonly called the spotted lever, prevailed in the villages ofElmira and Hoiseheads, and, to some extent, in other parts of Chemung county. The newness of the disease in this locality, and the fact that other portions of the State and country Buffered more or loss from Its visitation during the same period, are a sufficient apology for the following list of cases and subsequent remarks: Castl. Lafayette Tillotson, a healthy boy, fourteen years of age, living on Lake street, Elmira, after retiring to bed on the 23d December, 1856, was seized with pain in his head and neck, with chills and vomiting. These symptoms continued through the night, and the next morning he had also severe pain in Ids arms and legs. At night he was delirious, and the power of speech was gone. He was not able to protrude his 1 . his j i\v was set, and Ids lace was dark red in color. He grew very restless; often tried to raise himselt up in bedj tossed to and fro; struck with his arms, and kicked with his feet; groaned, but uttered nothing, save, now and then, '-oh dear. At length, after violent jactitation and overwhelming distress, he sank into profound como, and died 28th of December, after a sickness of only four da_\^. Case 2. On the 1st of January, 1857, a boy by the name of Walker, thirteen years of age, residing in the village of Elmira, was in the possession of perfect health; he spent most of the day (New X*eaw) away from home; at night he returned to his father's house, and partook of a hearty supper. During the evening lie was playful, and, at the usual honr, he went to bed.
