About this work

Description

Investigates scandal of pharmaceutical companies using developing world to test new drugs. Refers to cases of this in Nigeria, where Pfizer used an untested drug for meningitis, and South Korea, where Novartis tested a leukaemia drug. Finding it was successful, Novartis then priced the drug beyond the resources of those patients who had taken the risk of participating in the trial. The programme also examines the cavalier way in which Apotex Inc. conducted a trial for a thalassaemia drug at the Toronto Hospiral for Sick Children. The trial was abruptly terminated when the possibility arose that the drug might be dangerous, and the doctor conducting the trial was forbidden from giving any explanation to the patients who had participated.
