About this work

Description

Brian Beer re-examines the history of the 1998 MMR scare which followed the claims, made by Dr Andrew Wakefield, of a link between the vaccine, autism, and inflammitory bowel disease. He talks to the parents of a child who were at first convinced by the claims, but are now angry that that they were made to feel guilty as a result of having their daughter immunised. He also talks to specialists, and doctors who believe that the original claims were not backed-up by the research findings. The programme traces Dr Wakefield to America and tries to find out what happened to him after he left the Royal Free Hospital, where the original research was carried out, and from where the claims of a link were first made public.
