The Oslo study of untreated syphilis : an epidemiologic investigation of the natural course of the syphilitic infection based upon a re-study of the Boeck-Bruusgaard material / by Trygve Gjestland.

The Broeck-Bruusgaard study from 1890-1910 was conducted at the University Hospital in Oslo, Norway. Broeck withheld mercury treatment from over 2000 patients at the venereal clinic. When Salvarsan became available, he offered it to those patients who could be located. Beginning in 1925, Bruusgaard tracked down 473 patients who had not received Salvarsan and compared them to the treated group. Gjestland's comprehensive review understated the complex illness that follow the early infection because many of the patients were lost during the middle years of the infection and due to the study's retrospective focus.
