About this work

Description

Numerous groups of gesturing men either celebrating or lamenting the execution of the caitif Spencer who hangs in the distance above another crowd of people. To the left is a castle tower from which a figure retorts 'Hang the traitor'. Among the many retorts from the crowd, one man shouts 'He loaded us with taxes debts and penal law'. Another group of men pleads for help from a group of soldiers who appear from the right. Above, the devil flies off to the right of the scene with the words 'I must depart for a season'. Spencer is unidentified. There are fifteen verses beneath the image
