Biographical note

Sir William Goscombe John (1860–1952), a Welsh sculptor; He studied in Cardiff School of Art, the City and Guilds of London School of Art, and the Royal Academy Schools; Goscombe John created numerous public statues and memorials at home and abroad; His style is described as a compound of realism and romanticism.

Charles Johnson (1791–1880), a botanist; He was lecturer in botany at Guy's Hospital medical school and was known for using living specimens in his teaching; Johnson was a fellow of the Linnean Society and a member of the Botanical Society of London.

Christopher Johnson junior (1816-1894), a surgeon; He studied in Dublin at the Royal College of Surgeons, at the Meath Hospital; Johnson junior became surgeon to the Lancaster Infirmary.

Sir George Johnson (1818-1896), a physician; He studied medicine at King's College medical school in London; In 1846 Johnson became a member of the Royal College of Physicians and in 1850 a fellow; In 1856 he became physician to King's College Hospital and was professor of medicine at King's College for several years; Johnson was a fellow of the Royal Society; physician extraordinary to Queen Victoria; He was knighted in 1892; Johnson's contribution to medical literature was extensive, mostly dealt with the pathology and treatment of kidney disease.

George Henry Sacheverell Johnson (1808-1881), dean of Wells; a fellow, tutor and dean of Queen's College, Oxford; In 1838 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society.

Manuel John Johnson (1805-1859), an astronomer; He expanded the range of meteorological observations at the observatory; He adopted photographic recording of some of the instruments and installed an electrical recorder on his transit circle in 1858; Johnson was a fellow of the Royal Society and president of the Royal Astronomical Society 1857–8.

Alexander Keith Johnstone, the elder (1804–1871), geographer and cartographer; Johnston's work includes the National Atlas in 1843, the Physical Atlas in 1848, the first English atlas of physical geography, and the Royal Atlas in 1861; He was fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, honorary doctor of the University of Edinburgh, and a member of most of the world's important geographical societies.

George Johnston (1797 – 1855) a physician and naturalist; His books include The Flora of Berwick-upon-Tweed, History of British Zoophytes, and History of British Sponges and Lithophytes.

Sir Henry Hamilton [Harry] Johnston (1858–1927), an explorer and colonial administrator.

James Finlay Weir Johnston (1796 –1855) an agricultural chemist; He was one of the founders of the British Association for the Advancement of Science; He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1837; Johnston was a reader in chemistry at Durham University; In 1899 money from his estate was used to found the Johnston Technical School in Durham, which is now the Durham Johnston Comprehensive School.

James Johnstone of Galabank (1730–1802), a physician; He practised in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

George Matthew Jones (1826-1853), surgeon; He contributed Three successful cases of Excision of the knee joint, Med. Times 1852-53.

Sydney Jones (1831-1913), a surgeon; He was at his time the most prominent figure in the surgical work of St Thomas's Hospital.

Thomas Rymer Jones (1810–1880), a morphologist and physiologist; He was professor of comparative anatomy at King's College, London (1836-74); Jones was also Fullerian professor of physiology at the Royal Institution (1840-42); In 1844 became a fellow of the Royal Society.

Thomas Wharton Jones (1808–1891), physiologist and ophthalmic surgeon; He was professor of ophthalmic medicine and surgery at the University College, London from 1851 to 1881; In 1840 Jones became a fellow of the Royal Society and 1844 a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
