Biographical note
Horsley, Sir Victor Alexander Haden (1857-1916) was a physiologist and surgeon, born in London. He studied at University College Hospital medical school. After medical school, he followed three lines of study: the action of the thyroid gland; the localization of function in the brain and protective treatment of rabies. In 1889, he became a surgeon at a hospital in London. On 9 June 1887, he removed a tumour from the spinal cord, which was the first operation of its kind. In 1916, he died of heatstroke, complicated by intestinal infection in Baghdad. A full description of his life and work is to be found in the Dictionary of National Biography.
