Description
Cerebral malaria: histopathology
This is a medium power view of a section of the grey-white matter boundary of the brain from a patient with cerebral malaria.
On the left, in the grey matter, there is a congested vessel but no haemorrhage. On the right, in the white matter, there are two ring haemorrhages and one focus of demyelination (the pale zone). Both lesions follow small vessel obstruction. PTAH (phosphotungstic acid haematoxylin) stain (which stains myelin purple).
