    ADVlillTISEMIiNT TO THE FIFTH EDITION. Nearly twelve months have elapsed since the Fourth Edition was pronounced by my Publisher to be Old of print. An anxious desire to render the work worthy of the very liberal patronage which it has received from the medical profession, is the only apology I have to offer for a delay which might be mistaken for apathy. The increased size of the work, has induced me to publish the present edition in two volumes; an ar- rangement which will be ,found perfectly consistent with the original design, and with the distinct objects of study and reference for Avhich it was calculated. The increase of materials has been, in some measure, derived from the communications which 1 have re- ceived from English practitioners; and from the recently extended researches of the French and (ierman Chemists; but principally from the farther ficvelopement of those view s respecting the primary/ and seconUar/y operations of medicinal bodies, which were annonneed, but not (-xplained, in the former editions.
