John Stevens Henslow (1796-1861), botanist and Church of England clergyman, educated at Rochester and St. John's College, Cambridge in 1818, assisted Sedgwick in founding Cambridge Philosophical Society; Cambridge professor of mineralogy, 1822-7, of botany, 1827-61; recommended his pupil Charles Robert Darwin as naturalist to the Beagle; vicar of Hitcham, Suffolk, 1839; discovered phosphatic nodules in Suffolk Crag, 1843; member of London University Senate and examiner in botany; assisted Sir W. J. Hooker at Kew.
