Biographical note
As a medical student at Edinburgh University, Paterson was elected a Member of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh in 1756. He afterwards attended medical lectures in London [cf. Nos. VII-XXI] including some by William Hunter [Nos. VII-XII], and later matriculated as 'Medicus' at Leyden University on 4 March, 1763. He went to India in 1771 as Secretary to Sir Robert Harland [1715?-1784], and having amassed a fortune in a few years, returned to Scotland.
