About this work
Description
A three-day old chick embryo showing the
developing spinal cord flanked on either side by
segmented blocks of tissue called somites. These
somites develop sequentially from the head end
toward the tail and will go on to form the
vertebrae and muscle. This image was photographed
using differential interference contrast optics on
a light microscope. Biomedical Image Awards 1998.
