The ophthalmia resulting from the topical application of the seed- infusion has been recently attributed to bacteria M.M. Cornil and Berlioz extend this idea to account for the general toxic symptoms, which, they assert, are due to a specific bacillus contained in the seeds The great importance of this “ discovery, which if confirmed must upset existing views on bacterial pathology Manner in which the subject will be dealt with PART I. THE BACTERIAL THEORY OF THE ACTION OF ABRUS-POISO, CHAPTER I. The alleged presence in the seeds of specific bacteria or their spores.. Evidence against this is furnished by— (a) Culture experiments with the seed in gelatine according to Koch’s method (l) Inoculation and hypodermic experiments with pure culti- vations of the micro-organisms obtained from the seeds., (c) Microscopical examination of sections of the seed CHAPTER II.
