Biographical note

Crichton Royal Museum was set up in 1989 to coincide with the hospital's 150th anniversary celebrations. Although the Museum was called the Crichton Royal Museum and was located in Easterbrook Hall, it covered all aspects of health care in the region with material relating to all local hospitals. It was officially opened in April 1989 by Prince Charles, and the following year was awarded the title of Museum of the Year. When the majority of the Crichton Estate was purchased by Dumfries and Galloway Council in 1996, Easterbrook Hall came under the management of the Crichton Development Company, who, as part of the redevelopment of Easterbrook Hall, required the space occupied by the Museum. This led to the Museum's closure in 2004 and the relocation of its contents and the Health Board Archive to another building on the Crichton Estate, Solway House. There were initially plans to apply for funding to reopen the Museum; however these did not come to fruition and between 2004 and 2008 much of the Museum collections were sold or dispersed to other local museums, with some items remaining on the Crichton site.
